Allie Batson Obituary

Allie (Gurganus) Batson, 88, of Willard, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at her daughter’s home with her family by her side. Allie was born in New Hanover County on November 5, 1932 to the late Jessie Alton and Sally (Smith) Gurganus.

In addition to her parents, Allie is preceded in death by her husband, William C. Batson, Jr.; sister, Pauline Gurganus; brothers, Jim Gurganus, Buddy Gurganus, and Henry Gurganus; daughter in-law, Cindy Batson; granddaughter, Natasha Batson; and great grandson, Grayson Hooper.

Allie leaves behind her sons, William “Willie” C. Batson, III, and Timmy Batson (Sandi); daughters, Cindy B. Owens (Bobby), Phyllis Canady (Wayne), and Donna Poole (Tommy); nine grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Allie graduated from New Hanover High School and was married to her husband, William, for nearly 62 years.

Allie grew up on her parent’s large vegetable farm on Middle Sound and carried that into her adult life with her love of growing azaleas and roses. That farm experience instilled in her a strong work ethic, which was evident as she served others at various restaurants, and in the years she and her husband earned their living oystering and crabbing. She was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who generously accepted and encouraged with all her heart. Her “I love you very much” will long be remembered as her way of saying good-bye. Allie welcomed family and friends unconditionally into her heart and home. That love carried over to caring for her cats and dogs she had through the years. Her family loved her fried chicken (which no one else can duplicate), sloppy joes, “deep-fried” pancakes, mac and cheese, the never-ending candy bowl, fun times in the pool, Easter Egg Hunts, her laugh, hugs, and kisses. Her most enjoyable times were when her family gathered for Sunday dinners, holidays, and birthdays. She made Christmas such a magical time with her decorations both in and outside the house. Allie was happiest when with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Allie's gravesite in Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington for a remembrance service with a reception to follow at Living Waters Ministries Church, 141 Middle Sound Loop Road, Wilmington.

Due to Covid-19, a private family service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 29, 2021. Casketbearers were Tommy Poole, Chase Singletary, Cameron Poole, Antonio Rossi, Austin Warner, Carter Hooper, Chris Hooper, Matt Pollard, and Jeff Singletary.
