Bernard Filzen Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” Rudolph Filzen, 86, of Leland, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on September 20, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois, to the late Phillip Joseph Filzen and Theresa Ida Reising Filzen, Bernie lived a life marked by deep faith, service to others, and unwavering devotion to his family.

A devoted servant of God, Bernie was ordained as a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1976 and joyfully served for 49 years. He cherished preaching, ministering, and walking alongside others in their faith journeys. For decades, Bernie and his beloved wife, Patty, served as missionaries to Haiti, sharing God’s love in word and deed. He also served as Bereavement Director at his parish, offering comfort and hope to countless families in their time of need.

Bernie’s life of service extended beyond the church. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he loved his country and honored its values. Together, he and Patty opened their hearts and home through the adoption of seven children, creating a family rooted in love, faith, and generosity.

He was a man who loved the outdoors—whether golfing, fishing, running, or simply enjoying the sunshine—and he brought his sense of humor and “take-charge” spirit wherever he went. Above all, he treasured his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.

Bernie is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Patty; his sons Mike (Lucia), Gary, Mark (Angela), and Tim; his daughters Kathy (Tim), Sherry, Mary Tracy (Jerry), and Kris (Allie); his brother Frank and sister Patricia; 25 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. His life leaves a legacy of faith, generosity, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

While his passing leaves a tremendous hole here on Earth, his family takes comfort in knowing that Bernie is now in the presence of God the Father, rejoicing in his eternal home.

Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord. – Matthew 25:23
