Betty Matthews Obituary

Betty Jane White Matthews, age 87, of Wallace was born in Duplin County, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Dewy White and Mary Lou Cavanaugh White; her sister, Fannie Mae King; her brothers, Joseph White and Marion Henry White and niece Wanda Gayle King.

She was a member of Wallace United Methodist Church where she was a proud member of the choir. Betty was also a member of the Wallace Woman’s Club and Rockfish Country Club.

Betty is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Robert Dale Matthews, daughter, Mary Jayne Matthews; son, Robert Dale Matthews, Jr. and wife, Vickie R. Matthews; grandson’s, Andrew Joseph Matthews and wife, Sarah Matthews, Trent Stephen Matthews and wife, Courtney Matthews; great grandchildren, Mary Camron Matthews, Maddox James Matthews, Winston Miller Matthews and Declan Paul Matthews; nieces, Jolynn Bratcher and husband, Ralph Bratcher, Susan Pruitt and husband, Ralph Pruitt; nephew, Marion Henry “Butch” White; cousins, Knott Teachey and wife, Sue Teachey, James Cavanaugh and wife, Pat Cavanaugh and Ann Cavanaugh Fields; and numerous extended family and friends that loved Betty dearly.

Betty was a graduate of James Walker Nursing School and a career nurse and caregiver.  She was Dr. Sutton’s head nurse for many years in Wallace.  After Dr. Sutton closed his practice, Betty worked in Kenansville at a nursing home until she went to work at Pender Memorial Hospital where she worked until she retired at the age of 72.  Betty loved working and helping others. She enjoyed music, growing flowers, singing in the church choir, and playing golf. Most importantly and most of all, Betty loved her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Betty is surely missed but treasured memories remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

There will be a memorial service for Betty at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Riverview Memorial Park, Watha, NC
