Charles Evans Obituary

Charles Shelton Evans, 82, of Fayetteville, formerly of Castle Hayne, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He was born on July 22, 1938, in Kenly, NC to the late John Raeford Evans and Bertha Lee (Rowe) Evans.

Charles was the youngest of three boys raised on the farm, he remained a farm boy at heart his whole life. He met the love of his life and wife Peggy at Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington where they married in May of 1959. They lived in Wilmington until 2018 when they relocated to Fayetteville to be closer to their daughter Kim and her husband, Wayne. Kim will always be Daddy’s girl.

Charles worked for CSX railroad for 32 years as yardmaster and retired in 2000 so he could be a full-time grandfather to his only grandson, Kyle. He enjoyed some post retirement work in funeral service where he loved ministering to others in their time of need.

Charles loved NASCAR and could identify the make and model of any car built after 1930. He shared his love for cars with Kyle and the two of them spent many hours restoring a 1953 GMC truck. He loved watching Kyle on the ice, the soccer field and especially on the baseball diamond. He was so proud to see Kyle become a husband to Carly and a father as well. He felt very blessed to be able to enjoy his great grandchildren, Ty and Harper.

Most of all, Charles loved the Lord with all his heart and was a quiet servant who found the most joy in doing for others, whether it was feeding them from his bountiful garden and grapevines, working on the church grounds or dropping everything to care for someone in need with the over the hill gang. He served as deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member at Wrightsboro Baptist Church. He also was a volunteer for Relay for Life after surviving prostate cancer in 1995.

Charles is survived by his and wife of 62 years, Peggy (Hinson) Evans; daughter, Kimberly Moser and husband, Wayne; grandson, Kyle Logan Moser and wife, Carly; and great grandsons, Ty Moser and Harper Moser.

In addition to his parents, Charles was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Elwood Evans and J.R. Evans.

His funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, April 3, 2021, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington with Pastor Travis Horrell officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Wilmington at a later date.
