David Leon Askins, 83, of Hampstead passed from his earthly life Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
David Askins was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, on September 6, 1942, to Jamie and Hallie Holloway Askins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Dr. Jimmy Askins (Kathy) and Richard Askins (Gail).
He is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate, Diana Howard Askins (“D”); nephews Jamie (Jennifer), Jason (Maren), and Jay (Emily); nieces Holly Hardy and Shelly Thompson; five great-nephews—Carter, Cameron, Hudson, James Askins and Ryan Thompson; and many dear cousins in South Carolina, all of whom he loved deeply.
David grew up in Goldsboro, where he developed a lifelong love of sports through the Boys Club program. At Goldsboro Senior High School, he was active in Varsity Club and excelled in wrestling, finishing second runner-up in the state tournament. His determination and curiosity led him to study electronics at Wayne Technical Institute, followed by studies at UNC Wilmington and then UNC Charlotte, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in mathematics and engineering. During his college years, he stayed actively involved, serving in the Engineering Club, working as the club photographer, participating in the Radio Club, and competing in inter-club sports. Following graduation David became the draft engineer for Lundy Packing Company, a career which lasted for 34 years.
David proudly served his country as an honor graduate of the U.S. Army Southeastern Signal School at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He spent nineteen months in Okinawa as a Communication Center Specialist, operating teletype and cryptographic equipment and early computer systems. He achieved the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and held a Top-Secret Crypto Security Clearance.
David had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the coast he loved. He found joy in saltwater fishing, boating, water skiing, crabbing, scuba diving, photography, and music. In later years, he became a devoted member of PenderWatch, working to protect and restore the marine environment. He helped lead efforts to recycle oyster shells into artificial reefs and was actively involved in rescuing injured sea turtles. He also assisted with the establishment of the turtle hospital’s new grounds. David was a proud member of the Lions Club and valued the opportunity to serve his community.
Though raised a lifelong Baptist, David joined the Presbyterian Church to support his wife’s ministry. He became a faithful and much-loved member of Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church and later Topsail Presbyterian Church.
David deeply loved his family, his Lord, his church, and the friendships that he made over his lifetime. He loved them almost as much as he loved southeast North Carolina vinegar based barbecue, banana or peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches and cheering for the NC State Wolfpack. He was known for his humility, gentle spirit, and willingness to help others without seeking recognition. Although anyone who knew him would say his life made a lasting difference, David believed there was still more he could give. In one final act of generosity and service, he chose to donate his body to science, hoping to help future generations. He will be remembered for a life well lived, a heart for serving others, and the quiet but meaningful difference he made in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Topsail Presbyterian Church followed by a time of fellowship in the church fellowship hall.
