David Ollis Obituary

David Loyd Ollis, age 70, of Winnabow, NC passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. He was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in December of 2014 and received a double lung transplant April 15, 2020 at Duke. He later was diagnosed with end stage liver disease without hope of a liver transplant. David fought the fight fiercely but ultimately and unfortunately the disease took over.

He was born on February 13, 1954 in Oxford, NC to the late Earl G.C. Ollis and Marie Ollis.

David was a proud US Navy Veteran and served aboard the USS San Bernardino LST 1189. He was also a Mason and member of Vesper Lodge 0554 in Spruce Pine, NC. David was involved in many community and civic organizations over his career including The Civitan Club, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America serving as a Board Member several years and the Historic Preservation Commission. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Rotary Club recognizing his contributions and commitment to serve others. He was a part of the Economic Development Commission in Cleveland County serving as Chairman and also served on many Chamber of Commerce Boards earning an honorary lifetime membership from the Asheville Area Chamber. After moving to the coast David held a seat on the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce Board as well as being involved in the NC Community Foundation. David retired after 30 years from First Citizens Bank as their Southport City Executive. He was asked to come on board as City Executive with the newly established Woodlands Bank and later was given the Executive Vice President position. His bank was purchased by Bank of the Ozarks where he remained until retiring in November of 2015 due to the IPF diagnosis. His banking and community service career lasted for more than 40 years.

David was actively involved in Pine Valley Baptist Church serving on the Finance Committee for several years. He absolutely loved his church and church family. David also loved his family immensely and was married to his wife Sherry for 46 years. He loved spending time with all the family including all five grandchildren ranging in ages 2 to 16. Along with God, his family was always first in his life and were his priority making sure everyone was taken care of. David loved building things and had a great talent for it. He enjoyed working outside, playing with his grandkids but especially helping build projects for school. David will always be remembered for his outgoing, always joking, and affectionate personality.

David is survived by his wife, Sherry Buchanan Ollis; daughters, Kelly Ollis Stegall and Michelle Ollis Moore (Quisto) all of Leland; brother, Donnie Ollis (Elaine) of Spruce Pine; and grandchildren, Jordan Stegall, Avery Stegall, Elliot Stegall, Knox Moore, and Townes Moore all of Leland; also “adopted daughter” Lauren Walker (Dustin) and her sons, Peyton and James of Forest City, NC.
