Deborah (Freeman) Jones, beloved mother, sister, cousin, and friend, transitioned peacefully at her home in Leland, North Carolina, on Friday, June 27, 2025. She was 65 years old. Born in Los Angeles, California, on November 25, 1959, to Worth Odell Freeman, Jr., and Wilda June (Scott) Freeman. Deborah, her twin sister and two older brothers were raised in Sacramento, California.
Upon graduating from high school in 1977 Deborah joined the United States Air Force. She served many years as a Dental Assistant, completing her military career as a Professional Military Education (PME) instructor. She received a multitude of military awards, retiring from the service in February 1998.
Deborah married David Jones Sr. in 1990, and gave birth to her son, David Jones Jr. on January 13, 1994. An amazing mother, David was the absolute most important person in the world to her.
Deborah rarely spoke of her personal losses, but was deeply impacted by the deaths of her immediate family members; her brother, Anthony Freeman and her mother Wilda, died in 1997, within months of one another. Her husband, David Jones Sr., and her sister, Dierdre Christensen, died in 1998, also within months of one another. These significant deaths were devastating, but she found purpose and strength in guiding her son and giving him the best life possible. She embraced each day with resilience, determination, and love. Her unwavering spirit in the face of grief endured as a testament to the depth of her strength and the power of her devotion as a mother.
In 1998 after the death of her husband, Deborah and David Jr. moved to Denver, Colorado to be closer to her Freeman family roots. While reestablishing a solid life for her son, she served in numerous volunteer roles.
Deborah eventually returned to the workplace, leveraging her master's degree in Human Resources to establish a fulfilling career which included serving as a mentor to young professionals. She worked for 10 years at the University of Colorado Hospital, retiring as a Corporate Director. Deborah was then recruited and completed the last three years of her work career in a high-level management position with Kaiser Permanente.
In the fall of 2020, Deborah built a beautiful home in Leland, NC, which allowed her to live closer to her son who resides in Charlotte. She enjoyed traveling, frequently accompanied by her cousin, long-time confidant and best friend, Franchette Freeman McCurley.
Always athletic and competitive, Deborah was a high achiever, that lived her life with intention, purpose and service to others. Enriching her life volunteering, honing her cooking skills, watching sporting events, movies, enjoying literature and participating in social clubs.
She is survived by her son, David Jones Jr.; her brother, Michael Freeman; and a host of other family and friends in California, Colorado, and newfound friends in North Carolina.
She was deeply cherished and loved, and will be missed by many.
