Doris Virginia (Horrell) Futrell

Doris Virginia Horrell Futrell, 94, of Wallace, left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Sunday, May 8, 2022, from the Brian Center of Wallace.

She was born on April 25, 1928, in Duplin County, NC. She was one of twelve children that was born to the late Clint Morris and Virginia Smith Horrell.  Doris was also predeceased by her husband, Elwood Futrell and her daughter, Helen Pittman.   Being the last living child of Mr. and Mrs. Horrell, Doris was preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond Horrell, Samuel Horrell, Hugh Horrell, Daniel Horrell, Tom Horrell, Thelma Blanton, Lola Brinkley, LeRoy Horrell and three siblings that passed away very early in life.  

Doris is survived by her devoted children, James C. “J.C.” Lanier and his wife, Shelby of Rose Hill and Linda Lanier of Wallace; grandchildren, Tony Pittman, Terry Pittman, Teresa Outlaw, Alisa Godlock, Amanda Smith and Jim Smith; great grandchildren, Jamison Outlaw, Leslie Outlaw, Mariah Schroeder, Mathew Bracken, Katelynn Pittman, Karlee Pittman, Logan Pittman, Wyatt Pittman and Bree Godlock; great-great grandson, Lucas James Earl Schroeder and numerous extended family and friends that loved Doris dearly.

Doris was a loving mother and caring grandmother who loved her family with all her heart.  She was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace, “an instrument of God’s love on this earth.”  Doris loved people.  With her strong yet gentle presence, she was a friend to all who were blessed to know her. When Doris health permitted, she enjoyed ‘scooting around’ in her wheelchair visiting others at the Brian Center.  Doris was also an avid animal lover.  She loved all animals and had animals of her own. Doris was a great cook and was known for her delicious biscuits, collards, and her corned ham at Christmas.  Being a hard worker and having a big heart, Doris always put others before herself.  She will surely be missed but cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Doris request was to be laid to rest at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery with no public service.   

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial gifts be sent in memory of Doris to Pet Friends of Duplin County, Wallace Shelter, PO Box 152, Wallace, NC  28466.
