A kind and gentle soul, a gracious and loving lady, Edna Hollis Batts, entered eternal rest on Monday, October 23, 2023 at the age of 98. She was born November 15, 1924 to James David and Nancy Hollon Parker Hollis, living most of her wonderful life in Hampstead.
In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene “Gene” Batts, Jr.; six brothers; and three sisters.
Edna is survived by her daughter Gloria Atkinson (Charles); sons, Harold Batts (Martha), Ken Batts (Jane), and Leslie Batts; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; many extended family members all who dearly loved Edna.
She was a homemaker who loved to cook, can, garden, sew and quilt. She made quilts for her children and grandchildren, and in her later years made lap quilts for anyone that was sick. For years, she walked five miles every day, then cut it back to two miles when she was in her 90s. She also volunteered at Share the Table Food Pantry.
Edna was a member of Surf City Baptist Church for many years where she continued her perfect attendance in Sunday School for over 55 years. She enjoyed attending church and developed many long lasting and meaningful relationships. She recognized the church as her extended family and was warmly embraced. She looked forward to singing with the choir on Sundays and special occasions.
The family will receive friends at 11:00 a.m. on October 26, 2023 at Surf City Baptist Church (The Gathering), 304 Wilmington Avenue, Surf City. Funeral will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Pastor Bobby Owings and Pastor Danny McLamb conducting the service.
Burial will follow in Batts Cemetery
