Emmett James Highsmith, 75, a man of Christian faith, honor, and integrity departed his earthly life to enter his well-deserved heavenly reward on Monday, November 6, 2023 at his home in Rocky Point. Emmett James Highsmith was known and loved by many as “EJ”, “Big Fish” and “JJ”.
He was born November 11, 1947 in Wilmington to James Hanson Highsmith and Doris Dawson Highsmith. In addition to his parents EJ was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Highsmith; daughter, Joy Whitley; and brother, Joey Highsmith.
EJ is survived by daughter, Mandy Baker and her husband, Austin; son, James Sidney Highsmith and wife, Connie; his life partner, Gail West; grandchildren, Latitia Joseph, Sabrena Mathews, Logan Whitley, Miranda Baker, and Sidney Highsmith; brother, David Andrew Highsmith; friend of 50 years, Joe Moody; fishing buddy, Wayne Ashe; and many loyal friends, all who loved and respected EJ.
He was a long time member of King Solomon Lodge A.F. and A.M. where he had served in many capacities. He was also proud to recently completed his 33rd degree Scottish Rite, Valley of Wilmington. EJ was a past Grand Master Chaplain of Masons of NC A.F. and A.M.
For over 30 years Emmett James Highsmith was an educator in Pender and New Hanover Counties. In his later years he pastored several area Methodist churches and was currently an active member of Rocky Point Methodist Church. Needless to say, EJ touched the lives of many in a very positive way.
The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Burgaw Cemetery with Rev. Mark Murphy and Masonic Rites presented by King Solomon Lodge No.138 A.F. and A.M.
