Irving T. Glover, Ph.D.
Irving T. Glover, 85, of Wilmington, died Friday, July 27, 2018 at the Davis Community in Wilmington, NC.
He was born in Macon, GA, May 7, 1933, the son of the late Reverend Mortimer W. Glover and Gladys A. Glover. He came to Wilmington in 1936 and attended Tileston Grammar School, and New Hanover High School. He received the BS. (1955) and MS. (1957) in education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the Ph.D. (1964) in organic chemistry from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
Dr. Glover spent his entire academic and professional career in science education and research. He began teaching science and mathematics at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, was a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia, a postdoctoral research fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a senior scientist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities, an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee, and professor of chemistry at Roane State Community College (RSCC) in Harriman, TN.
Dr. Glover's academic career was supported by numerous grants, awards, and fellowships. He received his master's degree as a DuPont Fellow at UNC; attended Union College, Schenectady, NY, on a General Electric fellowship. The National Science Foundation awarded him a Science Teacher Fellowship and sponsored his research and teaching assistantships. In 1963, he was appointed a John F. Kennedy Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
As a participant in the Traveling Lecture Programs at Oak Ridge Associated Universities, he lectured at many colleges and universities across the United States and was the keynote speaker for the Two-year College Chemistry meeting held jointly with the American Chemical Society at New Orleans, LA. He was the Eastern Regional Collegiate Division sponsor for the Tennessee Academy of Science and a Fellow of the Academy. At RSCC, he received the Sarah Ellen Benroth Outstanding Faculty Award in 1989 and was named professor emeritus in 2004.
Although he directed research for doctor's and master's degree candidates and produced in excess of twenty research papers and reports in more than eight scientific journals, Dr. Glover was most proud of research he published with his sophomore undergraduate students at RSCC.
Dr. Glover was a member of several honorary academic and professional societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society, National Education Association, National Science Teacher's Association, Tennessee Academy of Science, and the New York Academy of Science.
He is survived by his sons, Christopher I. Glover of Wilmington, NC, and George A. Glover of Hollywood, FL; and his daughter, Amy E. Vogler and husband, Douglas of Glen Allen, VA, his former wife and mother of his children, Mercedes W. Yepko of Wilmington, NC; and his brother, Homer B. Glover of Wilmington, NC. Also surviving are; his eight grandchildren; his step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers; the Rev. Mortimer W. Glover, Jr., of Augusta, GA, and Joseph A. Glover of Jackson, AL; and his sister, Margaret Glover Ernst of Alexandria, VA.
His body was accepted by the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology of the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.
A memorial service will be held in Dr. Glover's honor at 11:00 am Friday, August 24, 2018 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington. The Rev. Chris Hamby will officiate.
