Ivey James Blackburn, 93, of Burgaw passed gently from his earthly life on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at his home with family and much love following a full and blessed life.
He was born August 9, 1928 in Sampson County, one of eight children born to George and Flonnie Mae Ivey Blackburn. In addition to his parents, Ivey was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirley Lanier Blackburn; his daughter, Shiela Blackburn Cowan; and all of his siblings.
Ivey is survived by his children, Jimmy Blackburn, Brenda Blackburn, and Dean Blackburn (Patience); son-in-law, Victor Cowan; grandchildren, Lisa Burget (Cody), Kimberly Fisher (Brandon), Megan Shoecraft, Samuel Cowan (Clair), Tony Horne, Jr. (Heather), Vanessa Watkins, Clint Blackburn (Jayde), Gatlin Blackburn (Jaliese), Jackson Blackburn, and Emma Grace Blackburn; great grandchildren, Dustin Day, Jamison Burget, Lauren Thornton, Iris Fisher, Aris Fisher, Mavis Fisher, Anthony Lowery, Ivy Watkins, Annsley Horne, Analeise Rivenbark, Hardy Blackburn, Lane Blackburn, Ivey Cowan, and Waylon Cowan; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Ivey was a long time faithful member of Jordans Chapel United Methodist Church. Ivey served his country honorably in the NC National Guard. He was retired from NC Department of Transportation.
At the age of 12 Ivey received his first guitar, discovered his musical gift, and spent a life-time sharing it with others. Through the years he played with many bands, Blue Grass music being his favorite. Ivey loved being outdoors in God’s wonderful world of nature and spent many happy hours fishing. Most of all Ivey loved and cared for his family as he was a devoted husband, outstanding daddy, granddaddy, great granddaddy, brother, and friend. Ivey’s presence in our lives will be forever missed, but we find solace in knowing he is at peace, singing to Shirley and Shiela, and rejoicing with his Almighty Father.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, JULY 9, 2022 at Jordans Chapel UMC with Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The Rev. Lenier will conduct the service.
