Jerrell Squires Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of  Jerrell Vinis Squires, a cherished husband, father, granddaddy, and friend. Jerrell was born in Pender County on June 11, 1938, the son of Guthrie Willis Squires and Annie Bell Flynn Squires Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Jo Squires.

Jerrell is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years and his high school sweetheart, Hattie Marshall Littleton Squires; sons, Gary Squires and Jerry Squires; daughter, Judy Cox and her husband, James; grandchildren, Camden Cox, Mckenzie Cox and Elijah Cox; and many friends.

Jerrell served his country proudly in the US Army, serving with the 560th Military Police Battalion in Vietnam. After discharge from active duty Jerrell joined the US Army Reserves serving with the 993rd Transportation Company in Wilmington. He served for 20 years, retiring as Sergeant. He was employed with Babcock and Wilcox Boiler Division in Wilmington retiring after 24 years. Jerrell embarked on yet another career working with Quinn McGowen Funeral Home for many years. In his spare time, he farmed and did some carpenter work. What an industrious man Jerrell was.

He was a member of Canetuck Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Jerrell was a member of Atkinson Lodge #612 A.F. & A.M. and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

Jerrell was a man of honor, kindhearted, lover of life, grace giving, and believer in Jesus. He loved and cared for his family and was a loyal friend to many. For the past eight years that Jerrell has been confined to his bed he maintained his smile and good nature, never complaining, which made Hattie’s caregiving easier. Jerrell was loved and will be greatly missed.

It is with heartfelt appreciation and much love to Alma Keith, friend and neighbor who has assisted with Jerrell’s care for many  years. A special thank you to Cyretta Page and Mary James who helped with Jerrell's care in past years.
