Joann Walker Meckley, age 78, of Watha, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at The Laurels of Pender in Burgaw, N.C.
She was born October 27, 1942, in Pender County, the daughter of the late Hubert Phenix and Sarah Ellen Rivenbark Walker. She was also preceded in death by her son, James Alvin “Jimmy” Mackley, and her sister, Hazel Jennette Collins.
Surviving is her sister, Catherine Harrell; brother, Fred Walker and wife, Jean; daughter, Ronnita Hawkins (Steve); daughter-in-law, Deanna Meckley; grandsons Caleb Mackley and Steven Hawkins; many nieces and nephews.
After retiring from a long career with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, she continued to work in several local businesses, including CVS Pharmacy in Burgaw. She also remained an active, devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church as long as her health permitted.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at The Laurels of Pender for the care they provided for Joann.
Due to health concerns in our country today, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
