With sad hearts we share that John Edward Wood Jr. passed away in his home on September 14, 2023 from cancer.
John was born in Wilmington, NC in Winter Park on February 18, 1940. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather (Pepa) and a dear friend to so many.
He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Wood Beller (Lenny Beller), his son John Edward Wood III (Debbie Miller), his twin sisters Barbara Rose Everette-Miller (Doug Miller) and Esta Jean Bradford (Gene Bradford) and his beloved grandchildren Hagan Michelle Beller, Lacie Marie Beller, Heather Dawn Miller, (Randal Bullard) and his great grandchild Alexis Bullard, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his first wife Brenda Kay Croom, the mother of his children, and his second wife Frankie Lee Wood, his beloved brothers, Samuel Everette Wood and Walter Lane Wood, and his mother Luela Barfield Wood Cooke and father, John Edward Wood.
John served in the United States Navy after graduating from high school and went on to have a 35-year career with Federal Paperboard Company as a welder. After retirement he started a lawn and landscaping business and more recently worked at Mott’s Channel Seafood at Wrightsville Beach. Since childhood he has loved spending time in the intracoastal waterway. He loved fishing, clamming and oystering, camping on the spoil islands and enjoying the water with friends and his children. For 14 years John and his friend ‘Snake’ could be seen walking the loop daily at Wrightsville Beach. John was the most joyful and generous friend and was loved by so many. He was proud of his family and loved his grandchildren more than anything. Over the years, John had many oyster roasts, shrimp boils, and clam bakes in his garage, where he spent most of his waking hours hanging out. John will be missed by anyone who knew him. John’s family expresses gratitude to all of the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and friends who have shown up to support him during his illness. His nephew and friend, Jonathan Wood has been his live in companion, and has helped care for him for the past two years.
