John "Shug" Edwin Leonard

     John Edwin Leonard, 91, of Atkinson passed peacefully from his earthly life Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at home.

     He was born May 14, 1932 in Pender County, where he lived his entire life. John was the son of Hanson Leonard and Myrtle Herring Leonard. In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Smitley.

     John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Bain Leonard; children, Deborah Sewell (Wesley), John E. Leonard (Julie), Joy Seale (Bill), and Elizabeth Lunsford (Harold); twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandson; many extended family and friends.

     John, a disabled veteran, served his country honorably in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Ideal Cement and from the City of Wilmington, working as a heavy equipment operator.

     John, affectionately called Shug by family and friends, was a Godly man of honor. He loved and served his family, his community, and his neighbors. He never had a bad word to say about anyone; his motto “If you can’t say something good about someone, say nothing.” Where you found John, you would often find his beloved canine companion, Teddy. John will be remembered for his love of family, generosity to others and his steadfast faith in God.

     A graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Leonard Family Cemetery, 2012 Montague Road, Currie, NC. Pastor Eric Hutchins will conduct the service.
