Joseph Nagy, Jr. (MSGT US Marine Corps, retired) Obituary

Joseph Edward Nagy, Jr., age 93, of Burgaw, North Carolina and formerly of Oceanside, California passed peacefully from his earthly life Saturday, April 3, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 31, 1928 in Star Junction, Pennsylvania, the son of Joe and Josephine Blastick Nagy. In addition to his parents Joseph was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Ricky Rooks.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred Hall Nagy; sons, Joe “Monkey” Nagy and wife, Rhonda and Robert Edward Nagy; daughter, Sandy Rooks; grandchildren, Tammy Wells and husband, Keith, Ashley Milam and husband, Justin, Sherrie Elixson and husband, Jeremy, and Christy Grider and husband, Jason; seven grandchildren; sister, Julia Skura; and many extended family and friends.

For twenty one years and six months Joseph served his country honorably and with dedication in the US Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and served in the Vietnam War.

Having served in the Marine Corps, Joseph was a man of discipline, authority and integrity with a soft spot in his heart for birds and butterflies.  He actually had several Blue Jays trained to lite on his hand for feed and seed. Joseph also enjoyed gardening and watching all of God’s plants and vegetables grow under his green thumb. Joseph’s passing leaves an empty place in our family circle as he will be greatly missed.

Graveside funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2021 at Riverview Memorial Park with full military honors accorded by the US Marine Corps Honor Guard. The Rev. Jacob Lewis will conduct the service. Following the service, the family will visit with friends at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers Memorial gifts may be given to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262, Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to a charity of one’s choice.
