Linda Sheryl Eaton, 72, formerly of Wilmington, N.C. and Charlotte, N.C. passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Sheryl was born on January 4, 1949, to the late Fannie (Betty) Hewlett and Rufus Eaton. She is also preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Ruby Millis; her grandfathers, Midas Brown and Dick Millis; her step-father, Graham Hewlett; her step-grandmother, Vena Brown; and nephew, Austin Eaton.
Sheryl graduated from Southeastern Community College with a degree in Education, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education at Appalachian State University. She taught school in Sampson, Pender, and Mecklenburg counties before moving to other jobs around the Charlotte area. She also served her country in the Army National Guard for 3 years.
While living in Charlotte, Sheryl had many friends, but two were especially close to her, Barbara Clement and Jimmy Gray. We are deeply thankful for them both for the help, care, and love that they provided to Sheryl especially as her health declined.
Sheryl is survived by her five brothers, Larry Eaton (Marlene), Eugene Eaton (Jeanne), Phillip Eaton (Jeannette), Marvin Eaton (Alene), and Mike Eaton (Sheila). Sheryl also has six nieces and two nephews that she loved dearly, and they loved her just as much. They will always remember the fond memories of going to the movies, sporting events, dinners, and many shopping trips that Sheryl loved to take them on. However, the shared laughter and love between them will be missed the greatest. Sheryl was also a great aunt to eleven nieces and nephews.
Sheryl loved playing women’s softball, but her greatest passion aside from her family was her love for tennis. She played for the Lake Norman Tennis Association and was a member of the United States Tennis Association. She loved sports and you could always find her cheering on the Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, and her beloved Carolina Tarheels. She also had a love for animals. There wasn’t a stray animal that she wouldn’t bring home to love and care for, and believe us there were many!
Sheryl was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, and she will be missed dearly by all of us.
There will be a graveside service at Masonboro Baptist Church cemetery on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at 3:00 pm with Pastor Rob Strickland officiating.
Our family would like to thank the staff of Spring Arbor, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center for taking care of our sister. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice in her memory or flowers are welcome.
