Loyce Phillips Obituary

Loyce Jacqueline Carr Phillips, 92, left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Loyce was born on the day of May 16, 1932 in Duplin County; the daughter of the late Julian Aubrey and Elizabeth Wells Carr.  She was also preceded in death by her husband John Thomas “Tommie” Phillips, Sr.

She was a member of Johnson Baptist Church where she was Choir Director for many years.

Loyce was the mother of Trilby P. Evans and husband, the late Timothy "Timmy"  Ray Evans of Warsaw and John Thomas Phillips, Jr. and wife Pamela Beck Phillips of Warsaw. She was the proud grandmother of Timothy Ray Evans, II and wife Emily Kelly Evans, John Oliver Evans and wife Pamela Mills Evans and Lauren Beck Phillips and special friend Garrett Grant. She worshipped and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Loyce was blessed to be the great-grandmother of John Luke Evans, Reid Langdon Evans, Clayton Mills and Madeline (Madi) Mills. She was sister to Mary Elizabeth Carr Haughton of Tennessee and numerous extended family and friends.  To her many nieces and nephews, she was their Aunt Loyce and she loved them dearly.

Loyce grew up enjoying life on her daddy’s strawberry farm in Wallace and helped with his local business, A.J. Carr General Store.  Her mother, Elizabeth was quite a seamstress and many ladies enjoyed wearing her handmade garments. Upon entering high school, Loyce enjoyed playing basketball and her love of music began – singing and playing the piano.  Loyce graduated from East Carolina Teacher’s College (now ECU) and began her teaching of English and Literature to high school students.  She taught many students at James Kenan High School and East Duplin High School.

During her early life, she met John Thomas Phillips, Sr., through a cousin of hers - Betty Jane Wells Phillips (deceased) and the two of them double dated with John Thomas as her date.  Later they became husband and wife. Through her later years, Loyce and Tommie welcomed their two children, Trilby Carr and John Thomas Phillips, Jr.  Loyce was dearly loved and will surely be missed but treasured memories of her will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
