Obituary

Mary Jo Carter Johnson, 94, of Wallace and formerly of Burgaw passed from her earthly life on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

She was born on March 8, 1932, in Wilbarger County, Texas; the daughter of the late Ruben O. and Lillian Skelley Carter.  She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years Willis Johnson and brothers William Whitney Carter and Robert Oliver Carter.

Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church and a former member of Burgaw United Methodist Church where she sang in both church choirs.

Surviving is her daughters Belinda Coates and husband Jim and Kim Weiss and husband Allen; grandchildren Todd Coates and wife LaDonna, Ryan Coates, Emily Weiss and Natalie Elliot and husband Cliff; great grandchildren Tiffany Wooten and husband Ethan, Corey Bostic and wife Rachel, Casey Schlapak, Beckham Coates and Jena Marie Coates; great-great grandchildren Ruthie, Emma, Madalynn, Tucker and William; sister Pam Carter Admire; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that loved Mary Jo dearly.

Mary Jo was a devoted wife and loving mother, Mimi and sister.  She found great joy in the simplest of things, but her greatest joy was family.   She was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace; and to those who knew her, "an instrument of God's love on this earth."  Being a diligent homemaker and having a joyful spirit she filled her home with love and welcomed all who entered.  Mary Jo was proud of her large decorative rabbit collection that adorned her home and yard — she loved being outdoors and gardening.

Mary Jo was the last of a generation when neighborhood children roamed freely from house to house, embraced by many parents as their own.  Mary Jo will surely be missed but never forgotten.  She was a blessing to all.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Rockfish Presbyterian Church with Reverend Philip Siebbeles officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
