Michael Raeburn Hawes

     Michael “Mike” Raeburn Hawes, 77, passed peacefully from his earthly life Friday, February 27, 2026 at The Laurels of Pender.

     He was born October 15, 1948 in Wilmington, the son of the Wendell Hawes and Estelle Thomas Hawes. In addition to his parents Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sharon Meeks Hawes.

     Mike is survived by his daughter, Sharon Hawes Rowell (James); son, Darren Hawes (Reba); grandchildren, Brooke Rowell, Ava Rowell, and Michael Darren Hawes, Jr.; many extended family and friends.

      Mike’s early years were spent in Duplin County, where he met and married the love of his life, Sharon Meeks. They were married for 39 years before her passing in 2011.

     Mike was a lifelong truck driver, first as a residential gas delivery driver for ParGas and later as an over-the-road tractor-trailer owner/operator. He traveled through all but one or two states in the continental United States and continued driving until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

     When Mike wasn’t behind the wheel of his truck, he was behind the wheel of his tractor, planting and tending to his garden, which brought him great joy. He loved sharing his knowledge of gardening with his children and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He leaves behind his beloved dog, Sassy, who was always ready for a truck ride and a sausage biscuit from Hardee’s.

     Though the last years of his life were marked by dementia, he was blessed to have a group of wonderful caregivers who helped him through the difficult days.

     The family will receive friends 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Shawn Burch conducting the service. 

     Mike will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Sharon, at a private family interment.

     Casketbearers will be Darren Hawes, James Rowell, Jeremiah Jones, Milton Malpass, Jr., Chris Moore, and Anthony Rowell.
