Peggy Hinson Evans, 87, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Peggy was born July 1, 1938, to Clyde and Flossie Hinson in the small mill town of Cordova, NC. After high school graduation, she moved to Wilmington, accompanying the family of her beloved Pastor, A.L McGee. She took a job in a grocery store owned by Woodrow Guyton and like the McGee's, the Guyton's soon became family. It was at Calvary Baptist Church where Peggy met and married her husband of 62 years, Shelton. They left Wilmington for Shelton's work, living first in Wendell, NC where their only daughter, Kim, was born and later Kernersville, NC where Peggy worked for Kaiser Permanente. They returned to Wilmington in 1966, and Peggy spent her years there working with Kaiser, then later as secretary for fellow church member and friend, Floyd Jacobs's business. A majority of her time was spent as a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served in the WMU, sang in the choir and rocked countless babies as a nursery worker for over 30 years.
Peggy was gifted in the kitchen and was known for her fabulous fried chicken, chicken and pastry and pound cakes. She and Shelton were often the first to arrive with food when a church or community member was in need. Peggy cherished her friendships with her Calvary Baptist family, friendships that lasted through her final days. She also enjoyed working later in life in the Calvary Preschool where she continued to share her love for Jesus and children. Peggy's greatest joy outside of motherhood was becoming a grandmother to Kyle, born in 1991. He was the light of her life and he brought her more pleasure than she thought possible. He added to that by marrying Carly and giving her two great grandchildren, Ty and Harper.
Peggy and Shelton joined Wrightsboro Baptist Church later in life and were embraced by that church family. They loved attending their Sunday School Class and all of the wonderful Senior events that made their last years in Wilmington so special. Peggy and Shelton relocated to Fayetteville, NC in 2017 to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law as their health began to decline. She enjoyed her new community of friends who were a source of comfort and companionship. Peggy lived independently following Shelton's death in 2021 but suffered a life-altering injury from a fall in 2023. She came to live with Kim and husband, Wayne where she was referred to as the "princess". She was blessed with many caregivers from Home Well Care, especially Mykal Thomas who lovingly cared for and ministered to Peggy throughout her journey.
Peggy lived peacefully until a stroke in May 2025 that resulted in a 3 month stay at Haymount Rehabilitation Center where the amazing caregivers and therapists poured themselves into her recovery. A special thank you to Kim's work family, "The Unicorn Tribe" or their support throughout this season of Peggy's life. Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, her elder sister Evelyn Hinson and sister Carolyn Hinson who died at the age of 2.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Kim and husband Wayne, sister Doris Hinson Sears, grandson Kyle and wife Carly, great-grandchildren Ty and Harper Moser, and treasured extended family, Weldon Davis, Sheryl and Mark Misunas and cousin, Susan Wilson Hyatt.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy's honor can be made to the Wrightsboro Baptist Church Bus Fund. 2736 Castle Hayne Rd. Wilmington, NC 28401.
