Raeford Charles Horrell, 93, of Atkinson, dedicated family man, soldier, and police officer passed from his earthly life Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Novant Medical New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 1, 1928 in Sampson County, the son of Daniel Raeford Horrell and Nellie Caswell Horrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Whitley and Nell Hackney; and brother, Carl Horrell.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 45½ years, Annette Bigford Horrell; sons, Raeford “Rae” Charles Horrell, Jr. (Nina), John Stanley Dickens, and Christopher Lemuel Dickens (Patricia); grandchildren, Raegan Horrell, Ally Horrell, Kristin Dickens (Julian), Brittany Dickens, Victoria Dickens (Jonathan), Brandon Dickens; great grandchildren, Madilyn Dickens, Savannah Dickens, Makenna Dickens, Jillian Martinez, and Jayden Cheshire; sister, Louene Sumner; brother, Leonard Horrell; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Charles served his country honorably and proudly all over the world in the US Navy for 21 years, serving in Hawaii, Vietnam twice, Cuba three times, Guam, and Taipei. After his military career he returned to serve as the Atkinson Police officer for 11½ years. Many remember Charles cruising around Atkinson keeping law and order.
He enjoyed fishing in Black River and surf fishing at the beach. Also hunting was on his bucket list of favorite things to do. It was noted that Charles could grill an outstanding steak that was worth waiting for. Most of all Charles was a devoted husband, daddy, and granddaddy. Charles leaves behind his loving and loved family and good friends.
The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2022 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with funeral service beginning in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Merrell McKoy will conduct the service.
Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery, 16550NC Hwy 53 E, Kelly.
