Reverend Macon Wood Obituary

Reverend Macon M. Wood, 83, of Wallace left this earthly life on Monday, May 23, 2022, to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forevermore.

He was born on November 14, 1938, in Duplin County, North Carolina; the son of the late Leslie and Sina Ruth Williams Wood. Mr. Wood was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elisa Godfrey Wood; his granddaughter, Olivia Turnage; brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Peggy Wood and sister, Macie Irene Wood.

Mr. Wood proudly served his country in the US Army.   He later attended Fruitland Bible College in Hendersonville, NC. With a call of God upon his life Mr. Wood attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned an associate degree in biblical studies.  Mr. Wood began his pastorate in 1965 and served nine churches in eastern North Carolina throughout the years.  He retired from full-time pastoring in 2000 but continued pastoring part-time until 2016 when his wife, Elisa became very sick.  Mr. Wood was a true servant of God.

Surviving are his children, Gregory Lee Wood and wife, Brenda of Ocean Isle Beach, David M. Wood of Burlington and Phyllis A. Turnage and husband, Wayne of Ocean Isle Beach; grandchildren, Joshua Turnage, Kayla Turnage, Heather Wood, Whitney Wood, Leslie Wood, Melissa Wood Siler and husband, Chris, Lauren Wood and Timothy Wood; great grandchildren, Tayven Turnage and Traeley Renee Yanez; brothers, Marion F, Wood and wife, Raye and Douglas “Doug” Wood and wife, Shirley, all of Wallace;  numerous extended family and friends that loved Macon dearly.

Macon was a loving husband and caring grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was an humble man who had a big heart and great compassion.  Being a family man, Macon loved his family with all his being, especially his wonderful grandchildren. He was surely a people’s person and was a great comfort to many during his life.   Macon’s favorite pastime was sports.  He enjoyed playing church league softball and coaching Little League football.  He set a great example for young boys as well as his own children by the Christian life he lived every day.  Macon’s keen sense of humor, his charitable spirit and love for the Lord and others helped him cultivate enduring friendships throughout his life.  These friendships helped sustained Macon through his and Elisa’s deteriorating health and her death in 2018.  Being a man of great integrity, Macon will be missed by all who knew him. His family is comforted knowing that he has seen Jesus face to face and heard him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
