In the early morning hours of Friday, June 12, 2020 Richard LaVerne “RL” Pickett, Jr., age 76, of Beulaville entered his heavenly home. He was surrounded the days before his transition with numerous friends and family who will forever mourn his loss.
Born on February 6, 1944 in New Hanover County, he was the son of the late Richard LaVern Pickett, Sr. and Lorene Gresham Pickett Morgan.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his best friend, caregiver and devoted wife of 58 years, Claudette Jones Pickett. Their loving home was blessed with two children, Rhonda Pickett Cave (and husband, Greg) of Wallace, and David Bryan Pickett of Beulaville. His pride and joy were his grandchildren: Kendell Cave, Kinsey Cave, Monroe Pickett and Axton Pickett. He is also survived by his loving sister Ann Pickett Henderson of Wallace; and dear step-mother, Patsy Pickett of Beulaville.
After graduating from Chinquapin High School in 1962, R.L. attended disc jockey school at Southern Business University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was then drafted to the US Army where he was stationed in Washington, DC. After an honorable discharge, he began working with Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company that later led him to a 36 year career with Bell South in Burgaw, NC. He loved deer hunting, 4-wheeling, driving his Broncos and his 1965 Falcon. But most of all, he loved talking to people about the Lord. If you ever had a conversation with RL, you knew who Jesus was when it was over. RL’s sense of humor was one of his greatest attributes and was a blessing to all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 14 2020 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home of Wallace.
