Robert Allen “Rock” Tompkins, of Rocky Point, passed away from his earthly life on Friday, June 2, 2023, at the age of 82. He suffered heart failure following a cardiac procedure while at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Rock was born at the home of his parents on May 13, 1941, in Pender County and was the son of James William and Lena Wells Smith Tompkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Ed and Walter Tompkins.
He is survived by his daughters Cindy Caison (Mike) and Bonnie Gore (Conner); grandchildren, Christopher Rich (Tammy Murray) and Megan Rich (Faim Eckert); great grandchildren, Jackson Rich and Aubrey Eckert; sisters, Dorothy Maxwell (Donald) and Teresa Downey (Tom); many nieces, nephews, and friends, all who loved Rock.
Rock was employed at Ideal Cement Company for many years until its closure, and then, worked as Terminal Manager for Industrial Fuel Company until the time of his retirement.
His love of the Northeast Cape Fear River was evident throughout his entire life. Rock spent many years enjoying river life by entertaining his close friends and family, sharing a good laugh and a drink. His gusto for life was known to all who loved him and fun times for him included cruising in his beloved Thunderbird, riding on the pontoon boat and entertaining on the river. Rock and his faithful cat Leonard enjoyed their breathtaking view of the river, and together, created a happy and rewarding life that he never wanted to leave.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with The Rev. William Hill Pearsall conducting the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the memorial service.
