Samuel Sampson, age 81, of Wilmington, NC passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.
He was born on December 1, 1940 in Robeson County, NC, being the eldest of 10 children to the late Marvin David Sampson and Tessie Mae Hunt Sampson.
After a chance meeting on his school bus, he knew he had found “the” one in Dorothy. While serving his country during the Vietnam War, Sammy eloped to South Carolina with the prettiest girl in town.
During his 23yrs at GE, he mentored many young co-workers and was known for his precision and excellence. He continued working after his retirement at Southeastern Machine and Welding well into his 70’s. Sammy was a talented man, who took pride in his craft whether it was woodworking, upholstering, welding or cooking…Sammy was a perfectionist!
Then there were his 3 sons. His love for them was indescribable. When he didn’t think his life could be any richer, along came his grandchildren. Sammy set the gold standard in being Poppy.
Sammy possessed a joyous sense of humor that made him a favorite of everyone who had the privilege to know him. He will be missed!
Samuel is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sampson; sons, Burton Sampson (Jennifer) and Ted Sampson (Matthew); brothers, Edward Sampson, Steve Sampson, and Jimmy Sampson; sisters, Faye Hammonds (Harold), Peggy Scott, Judy Hunt (Steven), Linda Henderson (Alfred), and Debbie Sacro; and grandchildren, Marisa Caproni (Tyler) and Reed Sampson.
In addition to his parents, Samuel was preceded in death by his son, Colman Sampson.
