Sandy Ray Gilchrist

            Sandy Ray Gilchrist, 76, of Currie passed gently from his earthy life Thursday, December 24, 2020 at his home.

            He was born December 27th 1943 in Harnett County, the son of Edgar James Gilchrist and Mary Hobby Gilchrist. In addition to his parents, Sandy was preceded in death by his wife Laura “Sis” Gilchrist; brothers, Alvin, Johnny, Tink, James, and Gene Gilchrist; and his beloved canine companion, Big Money.

            He is survived by his daughters, Tonya Hewett (Darren) and Peggy Singingwind (Dennis); son, Ray Collins; grandchildren, Raven Singingwind, Kristina May (Zach), and Hunter Hewett; great grand granddaughter, Gracelynn; brother, Charlie Gilchrist (Louise); sister, Sue Kelly; brother-in-law, Tommy Arnette (Betty Rae); many nieces, nephews, and friends.

            Sandy served his country honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He worked overseas for thirty years. He was also a mason.

            Sandy was a beloved father, brother, and Paw Paw to his cherished grandchildren. Always enjoying the outdoors, he worked on his farm and tended his garden. He enjoyed a good family camping trip and had a passion for caring for animals. Sandy was a man of few words with a big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His presence in our family circle will be greatly missed.

            There will be a gathering of family and friends Sunday, December 27th  on his 77th birthday on earth and his first birthday in heaven from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the home of Tonya and Darren Hewett, 10533 US Hwy 421, Currie, NC.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
