Shelby Jean Hammer Woodward, 86, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice Care Center.
Shelby was born on October 5, 1937 in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Isaac Leroy Hammer and Amanda Hefner Hammer.
She was a homemaker and rental property manager. She enjoyed traveling, thrifting/shopping, gardening, and birdwatching. She was a caring and loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and newly great-grandmother. She was a bright light to many and will be dearly missed.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, James “Jim” Oliver Woodward, Jr.; two sons, Nathan “Scott” Woodward and James Oliver Woodward, III; two sisters, Lula Mae Hammer and Nellie M. Hammer; and five brothers, Cyril Lee Hammer, Kennith Floyd Hammer, Howell William Hammer, Fred K. Hammer, and J.L. Burlie Hammer.
Those left to cherish and honor her memory include: her granddaughter, Sarah Woodward Lewis and husband, Rodney “Kyle” Lewis; her great-grandson, Smith Oliver Lewis; daughter-in-law and caregiver, Elizabeth “Beth” Spruill; sister, Martha Hammer Aikman; brother, Stephen N. Hammer and wife, Nancy; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home, 315 Willow Woods Drive, Wilmington, NC 28409, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Merrell McKoy officiating.
