Shirley Faye (Swain) Hughes

      Our beloved mother Shirley Faye Swain Hughes, 78, of Winnabow passed from her earthly life Thursday, January 13, 2022 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

     She was born January 17, 1943 in Wilmington, one of six children born to Daniel Rockwell Swain and Lyda Danford Swain, both who preceded Shirley in death along with her five siblings.

     Shirley is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Flynn (Kent); sons, Kenneth Brus (Doris) and Dennis Brus (Jeanette); grandchildren, Christian Brus (Tammi), Dakota Flynn, Kortney Brus (Ashton Darnell), Ashley Proudman (Chris), Brandi King (Jon), and Krystle Brown (Fred); nine great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

     Shirley’s life was filled with an abiding love for her family. Shirley loved to make people happy. She would crochet blankets for people in their favorite colors. She worked various jobs, her favorite was babysitting. Mama enjoyed bowling, fishing and especially working in her yard, planting her flowers and cutting grass. Before she lost her taste and smell due to stage 4 Cancer she loved to cook. Some would say her collards were the best. She loved the chicken casserole and pumpkin rolls. Mama was truly one of a kind and will be missed terribly!

     NOTE CHANGE IN SERVICE DATE AND TIME - A graveside service will be 12:00 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2022 at David R. Mercer Cemetery on Midway Road in Bolivia (Brunswick County). Pastor Wayne Holley will conduct the service.  The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the graveside service.
