Susan (Sherman) Robbins

      Susan Sherman Robbins, 66, of Penderlea, passed from her earthly life Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

     She was born December 2,1954 in Burgaw and was the daughter of George Philip Sherman and Edith Garris Sherman. Susan was predeceased by her husband of 40 years William Dudley Robbins, Jr., her parents, and sister, Linda Ellis. 

     She is survived by sons, William Dudley Robbins, III (Megan) and Patrick Sherman Robbins (Leanne); sisters Phyllis Murray (Horace), Sherrie Dunigan (Bob), Jo Wainright, and Jan Wessell (John); brother-in-law Gene Ellis; many nieces, nephews and friends.

     Susan held a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from East Carolina University, and was a devoted NC State fan, her husband’s alma mater.  She worked in Pender County at Burgaw Elementary School and Penderlea School for 30 years where she taught with compassion, love, and commitment.  She was a lifetime member of the North Carolina Association of Educators.

     With infinite energy, Susan loved God, her church, her family and her community.  She was an active member of Westview United Methodist Church where she served in a variety of leadership positions including being the chairperson of the Staff Parish Relations Committee.  The Guardian Ad Litem program was dear to her heart.  She fought for each child in her care with bulldog ferocity. She also served on the Southeastern Mental Health Board for several years and was chairperson of the Pender County ABC Board. 

     Susan lived a life of service to others and will be missed by all who loved her.  She was feisty and vivacious, nurturing and tender, creative and knowledgeable, with a commanding presence.  To her, every job was worth doing well. 

     A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2021 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Pastor Sherry Coombs and Mrs. Judy Jeremias conducting the service. 

     In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Westview United Methodist Church, 5610 NC Hwy 53 West, Burgaw, NC 28425 or to a charity of one’s choice.
