William R. “Bill” Manley of Wilmington died Friday, January 15 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 13, 1945 in Beckley, West Virginia, the son of the late William Relmer and Mary Margaret Manley.
Bill is survived by his wife, Kim of the home; daughter, Brittany Weyenberg (Michael); son, Brandon Manley (Haleigh); son, Chris Manley (Brandi); and daughters, Jennifer Sumner (Scott) and Tracy Manley. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Liam Weyenberg, Zack Manley, Morgan Manley, Alex Manley, Haley Snyder, Ayden Snyder, and Bryce Snyder; and one great grandson, Maverick Adams. Bill leaves his sister Sue Shelley (James) of Hampstead, NC. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Croom (Allen Ray) of New Bern, NC.
Bill had a long and active career as a home builder in the Wilmington area and as a building inspector for many years.
His first love was his family. A loving husband, father and papa always putting his family first. His last days were spent with the ones he loved most, living life fully with his family. He was an avid bowler in the Wilmington bowling leagues for many years. But Bill was also an outstanding softball player for over 40 years.
He played in the City of Wilmington Softball Leagues for several different teams and played tournament ball on senior travel teams for the last 20 plus years. A superb player, Bill won numerous awards on the local, state and national levels for his skill and talent. He was also an active member of the Wilmington Senior Softball Association serving a term as a league president, a team manager and a player. Bill was inducted into the Wilmington Senior Softball Association's Hall of Fame in 2016. He was a great friend and teammate to all who had the good fortune to know and play with him.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 23rd at 1pm at Riverview Memorial Park, 9332 Highway 117 North, Watha, NC. The family urges attendees to practice social distancing and to please wear a mask.
