William “Billy” Livingston Whitehead, 87, of Hampstead passed peacefully from his full and fruitful earthly life Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Novant Medical New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Pender County, the son of G. L. “Lib” Whitehead and Norma Barnhill Whitehead Murray. In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Lee Whitehead.
Billy is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Janet Groves Whitehead; sons, Michael Whitehead and Bill Whitehead (Julie); grandchildren, Zachary Robbins, Grace Whitehead, Trent Whitehead, Presley Whitehead, and Brandon Whitehead.
As a young man Billy served his country proudly in the US Army. For 15 years, Billy served on the NC Hwy Patrol. He then came into own and for the next 40 plus years was owner and operator of Whitehead Construction. For many years Billy was a Mason, Shriner, and always supported Shriners Children’s Hospitals.
A kind and tremendously generous heart lived inside of Billy’s tough business-like exterior. For fun and pleasure, Billy was a collector of old things, especially cars and tractors. If you drive down the road to Billy and Janet’s home you will get a view of many of his treasures. Through life Billy gathered many friends from all walks of life and especially had a soft spot for all children, wanting them all to get a good Christian education. Most important to Billy was his beloved family who he hated to leave behind. God, Family and Country defined Billy’s life.
A graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2022 at Riverview Memorial Park with Pastor Bryan Griffith conducting the service.
The family will visit with family and friends at the cemetery following the graveside service.
